Berlin Pride parade attack was Islamist-motivated terror, says interior minister

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt declared the vehicle attack on a Pride parade in Berlin a "terrorist attack with an Islamist background," identifying the suspect as a 21-year-old German citizen of Lebanese origin named Abdul Ballout.

Dobrindt stated that all evidence points to the suspect acting from "positions of Islamist extremism." Ballout has a record of criminal offenses, radicalization, and ties to the Islamist scene. He was recently sentenced to one year and ten months in prison in Berlin, but the sentence was suspended. Media reports indicate he was convicted for preparing terrorist attacks and had been radicalized online since age 16, expressing sympathy for the Islamic State.

The attack occurred Saturday evening on the sidelines of the Christopher Street Day event, organized by the LGBTQ+ community. Ballout allegedly drove a van into a crowd, killing one person and injuring 29, several critically. He then fled the scene armed with a machete and reportedly attacked other passersby in a nearby park.

Authorities are searching for Ballout and do not rule out the possibility of further attacks. An Iranian citizen was arrested overnight, suspected of being in the vehicle during the attack. Ballout was scheduled to begin a deradicalization program on Monday.

Analysts suggest the attack could impact the upcoming parliamentary elections in Berlin at the end of September. The right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD), which campaigns on criticism of migration policy, is currently leading in polls in Berlin.
