Berlin tightens security for techno parade after Islamist attack

Berlin authorities are implementing significantly enhanced security measures for the 'Rave the Planet' techno parade, scheduled for August 15th. The decision comes just three weeks after an Islamist attack near the site of the Christopher Street Day (CSD) parade, which resulted in one death and multiple injuries.

Around 1,500 police officers, bolstered by personnel from neighboring states, will be on duty to manage the techno-Spektakel. The security operation will include the use of a police helicopter and drones, alongside a comprehensive cordoning strategy. This involves establishing tiered protection zones along the Straße des 17. Juni in Tiergarten, where the parade will take place, ensuring clear access for emergency vehicles and securing the main gathering area.

The parade's location on the Straße des 17. Juni, between the Brandenburg Gate and the Victory Column, places it in close proximity to the site of the July 25th attack. Organizers of 'Rave the Planet,' a non-profit organization founded by Dr. Motte, have been working closely with the police to refine their safety protocols. While they already had a robust security plan, adjustments have been made in light of the recent events.

The event, themed 'Imagine Love,' will begin with a moment of silence to honor the victims of the CSD attack. Dr. Motte, whose real name is Matthias Roeingh, stressed the importance of this commemoration. Organizers expect up to 300,000 participants, similar to the previous year, and are preparing for challenging weather conditions with temperatures predicted to reach up to 36 degrees Celsius.
