Bernadette Chirac's funeral set for Friday in Paris

The funeral for Bernadette Chirac, the former first lady of France and wife of President Jacques Chirac, will take place this Friday at the Basilica of Sainte-Clotilde in Paris. This location holds personal significance, as it is where she and her husband married and where their eldest daughter, Laurence, was laid to rest in 2016.

An additional tribute will be held on Sunday in Corrèze, a region where Bernadette Chirac was a dedicated general councilor for over three decades, from 1979 to 2015. The day will include a religious ceremony in the town of Corrèze at 10:00 AM, followed by a "friendly moment of remembrance" at the Sédières estate at 2:00 PM, which is open to the local community she held dear.

Bernadette Chirac, who passed away at the age of 93, was notable for being the only first lady to hold her own elected political office. She was a constant presence alongside her husband throughout his political career, supporting him in his various roles before his presidential victory in 1995.

Many dignitaries are expected to attend the Paris service, including current President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte Macron, former President Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife Carla Bruni, and former President François Hollande. Line Renaud, a close friend, will also be present.
