Berri Backs Hezbollah Withdrawal South of Litani if Israel Pulls Back

Hezbollah has rejected a conditional truce proposed by the United States, escalating tensions in the ongoing conflict with Israel. The Iran-backed militant group insists on a comprehensive ceasefire and a complete Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon, dismissing the US-brokered proposal as a "farce."

Following Hezbollah's rejection, Israel's air force conducted strikes on a Lebanese village on Friday. This action came after warnings were issued for several areas regarding imminent attacks against Hezbollah. The Israeli military's Arabic-language spokesman, Avichay Adraee, urged residents of six towns and villages in southern Lebanon to evacuate immediately, emphasizing the danger of proximity to Hezbollah operatives and facilities.

Hezbollah chief Naim Qassem articulated the group's stance, stating that "the ceasefire must be comprehensive... without the Israeli enemy having the freedom to kill." He urged the Lebanese government to halt what he called "the farce and humiliation called direct talks" with Israel. Meanwhile, Israel's Defense Minister Israel Katz indicated that the army would continue its operations, aiming to dismantle what he termed "terrorist infrastructure."

The conflict has led to significant displacement, with Lebanon's state-run National News Agency reporting mass evacuations from villages targeted by Israeli warnings. Overnight strikes in the southern Lebanese city of Tyre resulted in casualties, including fatalities and injuries, with one strike damaging a bank near a hospital. Some residents have sought shelter in the older, less-affected parts of Tyre.
