Bettiol wins 13th stage, Eulalio still leads, Miholjević 123rd

The 13th stage of the Giro d'Italia concluded with an Italian victory as Alberto Bettiol (XDS-Astana) triumphed in a demanding 189-kilometer race from Alessandria to Verbania. Bettiol, a familiar face on these roads as he frequently trains in the area, showcased his local knowledge and tactical acumen by launching a decisive attack from an early breakaway group. This breakaway, consisting of 15 riders, was allowed significant leeway by the peloton, as none posed a threat to the general classification contenders.

Bettiol crossed the finish line with a commanding 26-second lead over Norway's Andreas Leknessund (Uno-X Mobility), with Belgium's Jasper Stuyven (Soudal-QuickStep) finishing third, 44 seconds behind the stage winner. The main peloton, including all the overall classification leaders, arrived over 13 minutes later, ensuring that the general classification remained largely unchanged.

Afonso Eulalio of Portugal (Bahrain Victorious) successfully defended his overall lead, maintaining a 33-second advantage over Denmark's Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike). Thymen Arensman of the Netherlands (Netcompany-INEOS) sits in third place, 2 minutes and 3 seconds adrift.

For Croatia, the stage brought mixed fortunes. Young talent Fran Miholjević (Bahrain Victorious), who had worked diligently for his team leader Eulalio for a significant portion of the stage, struggled in the final kilometers. He ultimately finished the stage in 131st position, more than 21 minutes behind Bettiol. This result places Miholjević 123rd in the general classification, with a substantial deficit of over two hours to the race leader. The Giro d'Italia continues its journey until May 31.
