Binational Program Aims to Regenerate 150,000 Hectares of Patagonian Rangelands

The vast and ecologically significant Patagonian steppe, spanning over 50 million hectares of temperate grasslands across Argentina and Chile, faces mounting pressures. Climate variability, persistent droughts, devastating wildfires, and widespread soil degradation threaten the delicate balance of this unique ecosystem and the livelihoods dependent upon it. Recognizing the urgent need for sustainable solutions, producers in the region have been actively seeking practical tools to enhance productivity while safeguarding precious natural resources and bolstering the resilience of their livestock systems.

In response to these pressing challenges, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and Halkis have joined forces to implement the Esteppa program (Strategies for Production and Grazing in the Patagonian Steppe). This ambitious binational initiative is dedicated to fostering regenerative grazing practices, improving soil health, and creating new market avenues for producers. A key component of Esteppa involves developing carbon credit projects, offering a dual benefit of environmental restoration and economic opportunity for local ranchers.

The program has already made significant strides, securing letters of interest from local producers to initiate work across more than 150,000 hectares. This marks a crucial first step towards the widespread adoption of regenerative grazing practices throughout the region. Esteppa's comprehensive approach is built upon five core pillars: promoting regenerative livestock production through planned grazing management; enhancing soil health, biodiversity, and ecosystem resilience; developing high-integrity carbon credit markets; providing continuous technical training and financial support; and fostering collaborative governance with rural associations, government bodies, and local stakeholders. This integrated strategy aims to build a more sustainable and resilient future for Patagonia's rangelands and its communities.
