Biometric Passports for All Arab Travelers? Conference Urges Acceleration

Arab nations are being called upon to expedite the implementation of biometric passports, a measure identified as crucial for bolstering the security of travel documents and combating fraudulent activities. This strong recommendation stems from the 22nd Conference of Arab Immigration and Passport Services officials, which convened in Tunis on July 22-23, 2026.

The meeting brought together senior officials responsible for immigration, passports, and nationality services from across the Arab world. Discussions focused on enhancing regional cooperation in critical areas such as migration management, the integrity of travel documents, and the implementation of robust security protocols. A key agenda item was the current state of biometric passport usage and biometric data management within Arab countries.

Participants urged states that have not yet adopted biometric passports to accelerate their rollout. These passports integrate secure personal data, including biometric identifiers, which significantly improve identity verification for travelers. The conference highlighted that these advanced technologies are instrumental in reducing the risks associated with document fraud, forgery, and misuse. Furthermore, the attendees recommended intensifying the exchange of expertise and best practices among member states regarding the design, issuance, and management of biometric passport systems.
