Bishop urges Nigerians to shun vengeance, embrace forgiveness

Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama of Abuja has called on Nigerians to abandon vengeance, hatred, and animosity, urging them instead to embrace forgiveness, reconciliation, and peaceful coexistence as fundamental values for the nation's progress. His message was conveyed through Rev. Fr. Richard Igyor, the National Chaplain of the Pious Union of Saint Rita of Cascia, during the union's 2026 National Feast Celebration in Abuja.

The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, His Grace Most Reverend Dr Ignatius Ayau Kaigama, has urged Nigerians to embrace peace, forgiveness and reconciliation as essential values for building a united and prosperous nation.

The celebration, themed “Cultivating Peace, Faith and Hope: Emulating Saint Rita’s Virtues,” drew over 1,000 devotees from across Nigeria. Archbishop Kaigama stressed that the virtues embodied by Saint Rita, especially her perseverance and commitment to peace, are particularly relevant to Nigeria's current struggles with insecurity, political tensions, and social divisions. He encouraged Nigerians to deepen their relationship with God, believing this would positively influence their interactions with others and their societal contributions, moving beyond a mere pursuit of miracles.

The Archbishop said the virtues associated with Saint Rita, particularly forgiveness, perseverance, faith and commitment to peace, were relevant to Nigeria at a time when the country was grappling with insecurity, political tensions and social divisions.

Rev. Fr. Richard Igyor, representing the Archbishop, stated that true devotion to saints lies in emulating their virtues rather than solely expecting favors through prayer. He urged Nigerians to integrate the values of peace, love, forgiveness, and reconciliation into their daily conduct, at home, in the workplace, within their communities, and in leadership positions. Igyor highlighted that Saint Rita's life offers practical lessons for a nation striving to overcome divisions and foster a more peaceful society.

Cecilia Oyakhire, the Prior General of the Pious Union of Saint Rita of Cascia, Nigeria, also spoke, emphasizing the vital role of women in fostering peace and strong moral values within families and communities. Describing women as essential agents of nation-building, Oyakhire urged them to be inspired by Saint Rita's example to raise children who champion peaceful coexistence and compassion. She stated, “Women are nation builders. Women are supposed to have a soft heart, to always make peace, show love and care.”
