BJP MP attacks Congress over low women representation in state cabinets

BJP national spokesperson and MP Sudhanshu Trivedi has accused Congress of a gap between its public support for women’s political representation and its record in states where it governs.

Trivedi said Congress governments in Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka have no women ministers. Kerala has two, he said, while Telangana has two, one of whom has since been removed. “That means four governments, three women ministers. This is a great injustice,” he said.

The BJP’s criticism focuses on Congress’s stated support for the Women’s Reservation Bill, 2023, which reserves one-third of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. Trivedi questioned why Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge had not spoken about the absence of women ministers in some Congress-ruled states. Kharge had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking implementation of the women’s quota and arguing that it should not be delayed until after delimitation.
