BJP Plans to Allay Gen Z Concerns, Sharpen Outreach

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is actively working to reshape its image and connect with the concerns of young people, particularly the Gen Z demographic. A senior party leader, speaking anonymously, stated that the party aims to reset the narrative that it has been indifferent to youth issues, especially following recent controversies surrounding examination irregularities.

The party's renewed focus comes in the wake of widespread resentment over the cancellation of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and irregularities in the evaluation of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class 12 papers. These events have fueled a perception that the ruling dispensation has not adequately addressed the concerns of young people, leading to recent protests.

The BJP, having been in power at the center for 12 years, recognizes the importance of youth engagement, identifying them as a key demographic alongside women, farmers, and the poor. The party intends to sharpen its outreach efforts, emphasizing that Gen Z encompasses not only those who protest but also those actively involved in nation-building, entrepreneurship, and technological development. The leader pointed to examples in Jammu and Kashmir, where former stone-pelters have become athletes, to illustrate the diverse potential within the youth.

Gen Z does not mean only those who protest against the government, they are also the ones who are diligently involved in nation building and development. The youth capable of building Start Ups and using AI for development can also lead protests to reverse errors. In Jammu and Kashmir, there were youngsters pelting stones and today they are winning the Ranji Trophy… So, it would be unfair to club them together and see Gen Z as protestors and anti-establishment

Acknowledging that the youth's concerns "require attention," the government is reportedly taking steps to mitigate anger and prevent it from escalating on campuses, drawing lessons from past incidents like the unrest following the suicide of scholar Rohith Vemula in 2016. The party is keen to avoid alienating young voters ahead of upcoming state elections, especially given the demonstrated impact of youth sentiment on electoral outcomes, as seen in Nepal's recent political upheaval.
