BJP Seeks to Regain Narrative Control After Student Protests Force Minister's Resignation

The demonstrations, which led to the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, exposed significant irregularities in the conduct of examinations. The opposition is trying to pit the BJP against the youth, whereas the steps that have been taken show that the government is sensitised about their concerns and took immediate steps to address those…the PM (Narendra Modi) himself communicated the measures being taken to ensure that students do not suffer.

These include the formation of a high-powered committee led by Nandan Nilekani to suggest long-term reforms, the establishment of fast-track courts for swift justice, and amendments to strengthen the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Law. A senior party leader emphasized that these steps demonstrate the government's sensitivity to student concerns and its commitment to ensuring students do not suffer.

The BJP is publicly blaming the opposition and "vested interests" for instigating the unrest, while internally acknowledging the need for course corrections. Party leaders are making efforts to connect with young voters, with some internal discussions referencing youth-led movements in Bangladesh and Nepal as cautionary tales. The party also faces the challenge of differentiating genuine student concerns from what it describes as infiltration by disruptive elements.
