Black instead of rainbow: CSD in Schlüchtern sends a message of resistance

In Schlüchtern, Germany, around 250 people gathered for Christopher Street Day, opting for a striking visual theme: black attire instead of the traditional rainbow colors. The event, held under the motto "Character, Strength, Democracy," aimed to convey a message of resilience and defiance.

Organizers explained that the decision to wear black was conceived months prior, intending to differentiate their event and connect with a more rural audience. He added that black also represents the daily oppression and invisibility faced by the community.

While the concept predates the recent attack at a CSD in Berlin, the tragic event cast a somber shadow. "Especially after what happened last weekend in Berlin, we must not let ourselves be discouraged. We must be extra strong right now, fight for our rights and show that we are here, otherwise hate has won," said one participant. Another attendee expressed appreciation for the rural community's visible support, emphasizing the need for greater awareness in such areas compared to large cities.

The Christopher Street Day movement commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York City, a pivotal moment in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. The Schlüchtern event proceeded peacefully, with police reporting no incidents.

I find it great that people in the countryside are showing themselves, not being intimidated, but showing that queerness exists here too, because I think that in such rural areas, even more awareness is needed than in big cities.
