Blue-green algae detected at Schulensmeer; Lummen issues recreational ban

Lummen municipality in Belgium has imposed a recreational ban on Schulensmeer due to the presence of blue-green algae. The algae were spotted in the lake this afternoon, prompting immediate action to protect public health.

This is not the first time Schulensmeer has battled blue-green algae; the lake experienced similar outbreaks in previous summers. Authorities attribute the recurring problem, particularly this year, to the ongoing warm and dry weather conditions. Blue-green algae blooms can release toxins that cause various health issues upon ingestion, skin contact, or inhalation.

The recreational ban will be implemented today. Due to the presence of blue-green algae, no activities on or in the water can take place. This also applies to the youth camps organized at the lake.

Symptoms can range from diarrhea and vomiting to skin irritation, headaches, respiratory problems, and allergic reactions. The recreational ban prohibits all activities on and in the water, impacting organized youth camps scheduled to take place at the lake.

Acting mayor Romi Soors stated that while the ban is regrettable, especially in mid-summer, health remains the top priority. The municipality is actively exploring alternative arrangements for the affected youth camps. If suitable alternatives cannot be found, the camps may face cancellation. "It is very unfortunate that we have to announce a recreational ban in the middle of summer, but health comes first," Soors said.
