Blue-green algae in Ostend pond: swimming ban imposed, zone opening postponed

The Koninginnevijver pond in Ostend's Maria Hendrikapark is now off-limits for water activities due to the detection of blue-green algae. The Flemish Environment Agency (VMM) confirmed the presence of these bacteria, which can produce harmful toxins, leading the city of Ostend to impose a ban on swimming, fishing, and all other water-related activities.

This algae bloom has also forced the postponement of the planned opening of a free swimming zone in the pond, originally scheduled for mid-August. The city has pushed back the opening to 2027, while preparations continue. For now, open-water swimming in Ostend remains restricted to the sea and specific club activities in the Spuikom.

Signs have been placed around the pond to inform visitors about the algae, the associated health risks, and the current prohibition. The Department of Health advises against any contact with the water, as exposure can lead to skin irritation, nausea, or gastrointestinal issues. Pet owners are also urged to keep their dogs away from the pond's edge.

The VMM is conducting further measurements to monitor the algae levels and determine when the ban can be lifted. While walking and cycling along the pond remain permitted, direct interaction with the water is strictly prohibited until the situation is resolved.
