BMKG Ready to Follow Prabowo’s Direction on Merger With Geological Agency

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, known as BMKG, says it is ready to carry out President Prabowo Subianto’s direction on a possible merger with the Geological Agency.

BMKG Secretary-General Guswanto said the integration could improve public services and support efforts to mitigate disaster threats. He made the statement at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Guswanto described BMKG and the Geological Agency as strategic partners whose shared mission includes protecting the public from geophysical hazards. The two institutions already complement each other in the information chain covering earthquakes, volcanic activity and tsunamis.

Prabowo had earlier raised the possibility of integrating the Geological Agency into BMKG during a limited virtual meeting with relevant ministries and agencies. “The head of the Geological Agency, I think, will work more closely with the others. We will consider whether the Geological Agency should be integrated with BMKG, but we will discuss it later,” he said.
