BNP activist found murdered in Jashore

A local leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was discovered dead with his throat slit in Jashore's Chowgacha upazila on Sunday afternoon, prompting a police investigation.

The deceased has been identified as Atiar Rahman, 42, an executive member of the Chowgacha Sadar union BNP unit. His body was found floating in a canal in Singhojhuli union around 5:00 PM by relatives who had begun searching for him after he failed to return home from his overnight duties as caretaker of the Ber Gobindapur baor, a local waterbody.

We have taken one person into custody for questioning and are continuing the investigation.

Police observed multiple sharp weapon injuries on Rahman's body, including wounds to the throat, abdomen, and beneath the right armpit. The body was sent to the Jashore General Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Authorities have taken one individual into custody for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation.

Relatives of the victim pointed to longstanding disputes concerning the baor as the likely motive for the killing. MA Salam, president of the Chowgacha upazila BNP, claimed that individuals with whom Rahman had conflicts over the waterbody had previously attacked him and his family. Salam urged the immediate arrest of those responsible for the murder. The victim was also involved in agricultural activities and irrigation management near the baor.

Atiar had longstanding disputes with certain individuals over issues related to the baor. He claimed those people had previously attacked Atiar and his family members, with cases filed over those incidents.
