Boat capsizes in Vietnam, killing 15 Indian tourists

A tourist boat carrying 32 Indian citizens and three Vietnamese crew members capsized off the coast of Phu Quoc, An Giang province, on July 11, resulting in 15 deaths. The Ocean Pearl Island boat, captained by Nguyen Hong Hai, 57, reportedly overturned about 400 meters after departing from Hon May Rut Ngoai for An Thoi International Port due to strong waves and winds.

Immediately upon receiving information about the accident, the Prime Minister sent his heartfelt regards to the victims and deep condolences to the relatives and families of those who died.

Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc has ordered a swift investigation into the cause of the "extremely serious" waterway traffic accident. He extended condolences to the victims' families and directed the Chairman of the An Giang Provincial People's Committee to ensure medical care for the injured and provide support for the deceased's relatives. The Ministry of Public Security is tasked with a thorough investigation and strict handling of any violations.

The Ministry of Construction will enhance oversight of passenger transport by watercraft, verifying compliance with safety regulations for vessels, life-saving equipment, and operator qualifications. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is coordinating with the Indian Embassy in Vietnam to provide consular assistance and address issues concerning Indian citizens. Local authorities in Phu Quoc have mobilized search and rescue teams, and medical facilities are treating survivors. Of the 36 individuals brought ashore, 21 were rescued alive, while 15, all Indian nationals, did not survive.
