Boca Juniors Moves Closer to Building a Sports Complex Near La Bombonera

Boca Juniors has secured a key legal approval for a multisport complex in the heart of its neighborhood, near La Bombonera. Buenos Aires lawmakers voted 53-0 to authorize the club’s use of sections of three surrounding streets.

The measure covers Wenceslao Villafañe between Del Valle Iberlucea and Espora, Espora between Wenceslao Villafañe and Aristóbulo del Valle, and Aristóbulo del Valle between Espora and Irala. Boca said it had used the areas for years for sporting and cultural activities, even though they had never been opened to vehicle traffic.

The club said the spaces had not carried public infrastructure and that the approval gives its long-standing possession of the land a legal and stable framework. That would allow Boca to continue treating the sections as part of the internal organization of its grounds.

Now we are very happy because they have given us permission to join the parcels and build the multisport complex for other disciplines.

Club president Juan Román Riquelme had previously said the authorization would allow Boca to join the parcels and build a facility for other sports. He said the club had continued submitting documents after an earlier rejection because it believed it had met the requirements.

Riquelme also praised recent changes at La Bombonera, including the opening of a Hard Rock Café with seating for 300 people and a private events room. He said there had been no new development on the stadium expansion project presented in March, adding that the club would continue trying to deliver for its supporters.
