Bodies of Nirmal Purja and three climbers recovered after Broad Peak avalanche

The bodies of renowned mountaineer Nirmal Purja and three members of his expedition team have been successfully recovered and transported to base camp on Pakistan's Broad Peak, according to the Pakistan Alpine Club. The recovery operation followed a devastating avalanche that struck the climbers on the 8,047-meter peak, the world's 12th highest mountain.

Nirmal Purja, 43, who was leading the expedition, perished along with nine other climbers. This group included six experienced Nepalese high-altitude guides. The avalanche swept them away on Thursday, plunging the mountaineering community into mourning.

On behalf of the Pakistan Alpine Club, with great sadness, we confirm that following an exceptionally difficult and technically demanding operation on Broad Peak, the bodies of Nirmal Purja, Zhong Wang, Nima Sherpa, and Kilu Sherpa have been successfully recovered and are now at base camp.

The Pakistan Alpine Club confirmed the recovery on social media, stating, "On behalf of the Pakistan Alpine Club, with great sadness, we confirm that following an exceptionally difficult and technically demanding operation on Broad Peak, the bodies of Nirmal Purja, Zhong Wang, Nima Sherpa, and Kilu Sherpa have been successfully recovered and are now at base camp." The organization added that the bodies of the four recovered climbers would be returned to their families.

Despite this significant step, three other climbers remain missing. The bodies of two Nepalese nationals and one Pakistani citizen have not yet been located. Nirmal Purja gained global fame in 2019 for summiting all 14 peaks over 8,000 meters in just over six months, shattering the previous record of seven years. In 2021, he was part of the first all-Nepalese team to achieve the winter ascent of K2.
