Body found in France in search for missing 11-year-old Lyhanna; investigation widens

The search for 11-year-old Lyhanna, who disappeared a week ago near Fleurance, France, has taken a tragic turn with the discovery of a body. While identification is ongoing, French media reports suggest the search may have reached a somber conclusion.

The body was found in Puycasquier, approximately 15 kilometers from where Lyhanna was last seen. Her parents have been notified of the discovery. The prosecutor's office is reportedly en route to the scene, and a statement is expected.

Authorities quickly focused on a 41-year-old man, the father of one of Lyhanna's friends, after he was seen on surveillance footage entering his car with the girl. He initially told police he dropped her off at a swimming pool at her request. However, the public prosecutor's office has deemed his explanation inaccurate and contradictory, leading to his arrest on suspicion of abduction.

Lyhanna's parents had expressed unease about the man prior to her disappearance. Following a sleepover, Lyhanna told her parents he had "tickled her a lot" and "ordered a pizza especially for her." While Lyhanna seemed unfazed, her parents instructed her to cease contact with him. Despite this, he reportedly appeared near the school daily, offering small treats to Lyhanna and other girls.

Adding to the investigation, questions are emerging regarding the suspect's past interactions with authorities. A report from 2017 indicates a complaint from the mother of a 17-year-old girl who discovered the man, then 32, was in a relationship with her daughter. That case was dismissed in February 2018, as the minor was deemed old enough to consent. In 2020, the man was dismissed from a middle school in Gers due to an "inappropriate relationship with a student."
