Body found in High Country river where kayaker went missing

Human remains have been found in the Goulburn River in north-east Victoria, six weeks after kayaker Shane Wilson disappeared while fishing.

Police believe the remains belong to Wilson, 53, whose kayak overturned near Ghin Ghin on July 18. A witness on the riverbank raised the alarm, prompting a search involving Victoria Police, the Country Fire Authority, Lifesaving Victoria and the State Emergency Service.

It feels like the search is being scaled back before we've had the chance to bring Shane home, and that's devastating for us.

The remains were found on Sunday near Ghin Ghin Road. They have not yet been formally identified, and police will prepare a report for the coroner. The death is not being treated as suspicious.

Ever since I was little, I couldn't say 'brother', so I called him 'brudda'. It just stuck.

An SES spokesperson previously said Wilson was a strong swimmer, but was not wearing a life jacket and was caught in a rapidly flowing current. His sister, Melissa Teague, had earlier criticized the decision to scale back the search, saying, "It feels like the search is being scaled back before we've had the chance to bring Shane home, and that's devastating for us."

Teague described her brother as her best friend and said she missed their everyday conversations. She recalled that, as a child, she could not say "brother" and called him "brudda", a nickname that remained.

Those everyday conversations are what I miss the most. He wasn't just my big brother ... he was my best friend.
