Bolivia and Brazil agree to boost road and air integration

Bolivia and Brazil have formalized a commitment to bolster integration through two significant cooperation agreements focused on improving road and air connectivity between Bolivia's Chiquitania region and Brazil's Mato Grosso state. The pacts were signed in San Ignacio de Velasco by high-ranking officials from both nations.

The first agreement is a framework for inter-institutional cooperation to conduct studies for a new road project. This project, linking San Ignacio de Velasco to Marfil and the Brazilian border, aims to define the technical specifications for a vital new integration corridor. This initiative is expected to enhance the transport of goods and people in a region rich in productive, forestry, and livestock potential, where current unpaved roads pose challenges, especially during the rainy season.

The second accord establishes an air connection. It plans to implement routes between Marechal Rondon International Airport in Cuiabá, the airport in San Ignacio de Velasco, and Viru Viru International Airport. This air link is intended to strengthen logistical integration and expand regional connectivity, fostering tourism and commercial exchange.

Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz emphasized the urgency of these projects, stating his administration's full commitment to expediting the studies and processes. He highlighted that both initiatives are crucial for generating greater development opportunities for the Chiquitania region and consolidating integration with Brazil, describing the effort as "building the homeland."

Minister of Public Works Mauricio Zamora added that these agreements will open new perspectives for the region, promising to promote regular flights and initiate studies for the new road corridor. The road project is envisioned not only to improve regional transport but also to serve as a strategic axis for the bioceanic corridor, positioning San Ignacio de Velasco as an international gateway.
