Bolivia's Cotas Juniors Wins South American Futsal Title

Bolivian club futsal is celebrating a significant continental victory as Cotas Juniors, based in Santa Cruz, has claimed the South American championship. This triumph ends a 20-year drought for Bolivian clubs in continental competitions, bringing pride to the nation's futsal scene.

The final match, held in Asunción, Paraguay, saw Cotas Juniors face off against the host team, Atenas. After a goalless draw through regular time and extra time, the championship was decided by a penalty shootout. Cotas Juniors emerged victorious, with key penalties scored by captain Diego “Cachito” Melgarejo and Santiago Martinez.

Bolivian goalkeeper José Campos was instrumental in the win, saving crucial penalties from Atenas players Cristian Martinez and Pitu Román. Despite missing their top scorer and championship's leading goalscorer, Kevin Ariza, who was disqualified along with two local players, the team persevered.

In the third-place match, another Paraguayan team, 12 de Junio, secured third place by defeating San Miguel of Uruguay 9-6. This victory for Cotas Juniors is a historic achievement, mirroring the success of another Santa Cruz-based club, C.R.E., which won the same continental title in 2006 by defeating a Paraguayan opponent. The tournament itself, the 45th edition, first took place in Asunción in 1970.
