Bolivia: Two key suspects in 'suitcase case' released from prison

Laura Rojas and Hebert Zeballos, central figures in the investigation into 32 suitcases, have been released from Palmasola prison. They will now face the legal process under alternative precautionary measures.

Rojas, a former deputy, left prison on Monday after nearly seven months of pre-trial detention. She is suspected of involvement in the arrival of 32 suitcases at Viru Viru airport, the contents and destination of which are under investigation. Upon her release, Rojas stated she would cooperate with the investigation, expressing gratitude for the opportunity.

Her precautionary measures include house arrest without police escort, weekly appearances before the Public Ministry, travel restrictions, personal guarantors, and a 50,000 boliviano bail. Her lawyer noted that these measures respect her right to work. Rojas was arrested on January 26 following her appearance to testify.

Zeballos, a former judge, was released on August 4. His pre-trial detention was revoked, and he was granted house arrest. The release order was issued by Judge Rosario Ximena Flores Paniagua, complying with a higher court's resolution. Zeballos was arrested on January 23, linked to the "narcomaletas" case. Authorities reported finding marijuana during a search of a security company associated with him.

Although Rojas and Zeballos are no longer detained, the investigation into the suitcases remains open. The case began after a charter flight arrived at Viru Viru airport with the 32 suitcases.
