Bolivian football referees to explain VAR decisions to stadium crowds

Football fans in Bolivia will soon hear referees explain Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decisions directly through stadium loudspeakers. The Bolivian Football Federation (FBF) announced that this new transparency measure will take effect from the 18th matchday of the Professional Division and the third round of the Copa Bolivia.

When a referee reviews a play on the monitor and either changes or confirms their initial call, they will now publicly announce their reasoning. This requires home clubs to ensure their sound systems are functional and connected to the Video Operation Room (VOR).

This initiative mirrors practices seen in international competitions. The International Football Association Board (IFAB) approved a trial for referees to communicate VAR decisions in stadiums in January 2023, aiming to enhance fan comprehension. FIFA has since adopted this system in tournaments like the Women's World Cup and the Club World Cup.

The FBF had already trained its referees in June on how to implement these public announcements following VAR reviews. The implementation aligns with Article 154 of the 2026 Professional Division Regulations, as communicated by the FBF's Competition Directorate. This move promises to give fans direct insight into refereeing decisions, eliminating the need to wait for television replays or post-match explanations.
