Bologna bombing anniversary: Italian leaders condemn 'neo-fascist terrorism'

Bologna on Sunday marked the 46th anniversary of the devastating bombing at its central train station on August 2, 1980, an event that claimed the lives of 85 people and injured over 200. A procession honored the victims, with the nation's leaders reflecting on the tragedy and its perpetrators.

President Sergio Mattarella, in a message, described the bombing as a profound scar on Italy's republican history and conscience. He spoke of the enduring pain for the "innocent victims, women, men, children" and the "dismay for the destruction" brought to the city and nation. Mattarella stressed that the "neo-fascist strategy of terror" sought to destroy the values of freedom, justice, and democracy, urging a continued commitment to safeguarding the future.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated on social media that 46 years ago, "terrorism delivered one of its most ferocious attacks," striking the nation's heart. She called the bombing, which disintegrated the station, "one of the darkest and most dramatic pages in national history." Meloni joined the victims' families and the people of Bologna in commemorating the day.

Senate President Ignazio La Russa reiterated that judicial rulings have definitively attributed responsibility for the "horrible massacre" to a "fascist matrix." He also supported calls to continue the pursuit of "complete truth," deeming it a debt owed to Italy. Meanwhile, Democratic Party Secretary Elly Schlein urged those in government to fully acknowledge and implement the sentences, which she said confirmed the "neo-fascist matrix" of the subversive terrorist attack, carried out with the complicity of "deviated apparatuses."
