Bomb threat targets South Korean high school amid baseball controversy

Gwangju Jeil High School was the target of a bomb threat posted online, leading to an urgent evacuation and a large-scale search operation by police and fire departments. The threat, which claimed explosives were planted at the school, also mentioned "the future of Baejae High students being trampled."

Approximately 20 staff members and students were immediately evacuated from the school premises. Police and fire services conducted a thorough search of classrooms and other school facilities. Fortunately, no explosives have been discovered thus far. Authorities are investigating the origin of the threat, believing it is connected to a recent baseball game between Gwangju Jeil High and Baejae High.

The controversy stems from remarks made by some Baejae High student athletes during a game on June 29th. They chanted slogans reminiscent of a recent Starbucks Korea promotion that faced criticism for allegedly mocking the May 18th Gwangju Democratization Movement. This incident led to disciplinary action against the students and a six-month suspension for the Baejae High baseball team.

Representatives from Baejae High, including players, coaches, parents, and the principal, are scheduled to visit Gwangju Jeil High on July 6th to offer an apology. The bomb threat has escalated tensions surrounding this ongoing dispute.
