Bordeaux wildfire poses no threat to Blayais nuclear plant

Despite a massive wildfire raging near Bordeaux, France, the Blayais nuclear power plant remains safe and is not threatened by the flames. The plant, situated approximately 70 kilometers from the fire's epicenter, is protected by a combination of geographical features and robust safety protocols implemented by EDF, the plant operator.

The immediate environment of the plant is made up of marshes, not very subject to forest fire risks.

EDF highlighted that the plant's location on the opposite bank of the Gironde estuary, which begins to widen significantly in that area, acts as a natural barrier. The opposite shore is 4 kilometers away, providing a substantial buffer. Furthermore, the immediate surroundings of the plant consist of marshland, which is less susceptible to forest fires. This environmental factor was considered during the plant's design and continues to enhance its safety.

Safety inspections are routinely conducted, including thorough assessments of vegetation management around the facility. EDF confirmed that a recent inspection on July 22, 2026, led by the plant's Safety Mission Chief and a professional firefighter, deemed the clearing of vegetation around the plant and the RTE substation sufficient. Access routes for emergency services are also secured.

This Wednesday, July 22, 2026, the Safety Mission Chief of the Blayais nuclear power plant, alongside the site's professional firefighter officer (OSPP), conducted an in-depth inspection to confirm the sufficiency of vegetation clearing around the plant and the RTE substation.

Following the Fukushima accident in 2011, nuclear power plants, including Blayais, have undergone significant safety upgrades. Dikes have been reinforced against potential flooding, and cooperation with local fire departments (SDIS) is maintained through partnership agreements. While not subject to SEVESO directives, French civil nuclear facilities are strictly regulated as "basic nuclear installations" (INB) under the control of the Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN), ensuring a high level of safety.

The clearing was deemed sufficient by the OSPP (distance criterion from the first buildings or structures). The access routes for external emergency services are also secured.
