Border Fire Threatens German Town; Evacuations Prepared

The German town of Monschau, situated near the Belgian border, is on high alert as a significant forest fire rages in the High Fens region. Authorities are urging residents in several settlements, including Ruitzhof, Leyloch, Vennhof, Haus Sonnentau, and Plattevenn, to prepare for possible evacuations due to the fire's proximity and potential to spread into North Rhine-Westphalia.

The town has advised residents to seek accommodation with relatives or friends if possible, while emergency shelters are being prepared. This precautionary measure comes as the fire, which is burning intensely on the Belgian side, has already prompted evacuations in the Belgian villages of Küchelscheid and Leykaul. The affected area in Belgium now spans approximately 1,600 hectares, according to the Belga news agency.

The fire poses a serious environmental threat to the unique High Fens nature park, a transboundary protected area known for its peatlands and diverse ecosystems. Firefighting efforts are likely complicated by the terrain and weather conditions. Officials are closely monitoring the situation to assess the risk to German territory and to coordinate response efforts across the border.
