Botched Reflecting Pool Repairs Threaten National Park Service Reputation

The National Park Service (NPS) finds itself in a political bind due to what critics are calling "botched repairs" at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, initiated under President Donald Trump's administration. The agency, long respected for its public service, is navigating controversial directives from the president, ranging from exhibit alterations to the demolition of significant structures.

Critics argue that these actions, exemplified by the prolonged saga surrounding the Reflecting Pool repairs and other demands, risk undermining the NPS's integrity. Bill Wade, former park ranger and executive director of the Association of National Park Rangers, stated, "Never, not once in decades, have I witnessed such systematic degradation, disrespect and dismantling of the National Park Service as I see today under the thumb of President Donald Trump and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum."

Wade further described the Trump administration's actions as an "assault on the people, the mission and the values" that have established the NPS as a cherished American institution. The agency has been central to several contentious decisions during Trump's second term, including an executive order that prompted reviews of national parks and sites perceived to contain "divisive narratives" or "improper ideology," leading to changes in exhibits on topics like slavery and climate change.

Adding to the strain, the NPS has experienced a substantial loss of its permanent workforce, with at least a quarter of employees departing through layoffs, forced retirements, or resignations since the beginning of Trump's second term. California Rep. Jared Huffman, the top Democrat on the House Natural Resources Committee, asserted that park service employees "are being politicized and drawn into the absurdities and corruption of this administration" regularly, citing the Reflecting Pool project, a proposed memorial arch, and the exhibit order as examples. Huffman characterized the ongoing political pressure as "unlike anything we've seen in this country."
