Bougainville sets 2027 Self-Government, 2030 Independence Target

Bougainville is charting a course toward self-government and eventual independence, with leaders agreeing on a strategic roadmap to achieve these goals. The autonomous region aims to declare self-government on September 1, 2027, followed by a push for full independence in either 2030 or 2032.

President Ishmael Toroama is expected to formally announce the KVR Communiqué, which outlines the detailed plan for this transition. The agreement was reached during a significant meeting of the Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG) leaders and Bougainville Members of Parliament held at the Kokopo Village Resort on June 21, 2026.

The roadmap signifies a determined step by Bougainville to assert its political future, setting concrete timelines for increased autonomy and sovereignty. The decisions made reflect a collective will to move forward with the region's long-standing aspirations for self-determination.
