Bougainville Urged to Prepare for El Niño-Linked Drought

The Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG) is urging its population to prepare for a prolonged drought expected to hit the region due to the El Niño phenomenon. The ABG issued a statement indicating an 80 to 90 percent probability of experiencing below-normal rainfall across Bougainville through the end of the year. Communities in the Nissan Atolls and other vulnerable outer islands in Northern Bougainville will be prioritized for drought monitoring efforts.

El Niño commonly leads to hotter and drier weather patterns across Papua New Guinea, elevating the risks of drought, dwindling water supplies, crop failures, and food insecurity. These impacts are particularly concerning for communities in the Highlands and remote island regions. The PNG National Weather Service has confirmed that a strong El Niño event is well-established and is projected to continue into early 2027, bringing extended dry spells to many parts of the country.

The situation is being classified as an elevated drought and water-security risk, moving beyond typical seasonal conditions. Special attention is being paid to water supplies, the condition of food gardens, overall food security, and the specific needs of remote island communities. All residents are advised to closely monitor their water reserves, practice water conservation, safeguard their food gardens, and promptly report any water shortages or drought-related concerns to their respective Community Governments and district authorities.
