A new proposition for Hamas to disarm in Gaza, brokered through a complex diplomatic process, presents a potential, albeit fragile, opportunity for progress amidst a bleak situation. The core of the proposed bargain involves Hamas relinquishing its weapons in exchange for Israel's withdrawal from 70% of the territory it occupies.

However, the path forward is fraught with challenges. The realities of war, profound mistrust, and the devastating loss of life and destruction in Gaza make the process exceptionally complicated. Life for over two million Palestinian civilians is catastrophic, with many homes and livelihoods destroyed. According to the Hamas-run health ministry, Israel killed more than 70,000 Palestinians during the war, and Unicef reports over 20,000 children killed or wounded since October 7, 2023.

Many Palestinians and leaders in Jordan and Egypt believe Israel aims to force an ethnic cleansing of Palestinians by making life insupportable. On the Israeli side, a strong majority believes Hamas remains a deadly threat that must be disarmed and stripped of power, citing the October 7 attack where Hamas killed nearly 1,200 people and took 251 hostages.

The success of this diplomatic effort also hinges on broader political factors. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces a general election at the end of October and is trailing in the polls. His ongoing corruption trial could see him imprisoned if he loses power, adding another layer of political pressure to his decision-making regarding the Gaza deal.
