Brandenburg Expects Good Apple Harvest Amid Regional Challenges

Brandenburg is anticipating a strong apple harvest in 2026, with projections indicating an above-average yield of approximately 22,800 tons. This represents a substantial increase from the 16,600 tons harvested in the previous year. The estimated yield per hectare is nearly 31 tons, surpassing the average of 22.9 tons recorded between 2020 and 2025.

However, the expected bounty is not uniform across the region. While fewer frost damages were reported this year compared to previous seasons, a heatwave in June affected the apple trees. The final harvest volume will ultimately depend on the ongoing weather conditions. The statistics office noted that regional differences in yield are significant.

For some growers, the situation is far from ideal. Thomas Bröcker, an orchard farmer and vice-president of the Berlin-Brandenburg Horticultural Association, reported considerable frost damage and heat-related issues affecting his apples. He anticipates a 50 percent loss in yield at his operation. Compounding these challenges, Bröcker highlighted the issue of low producer prices, receiving only 28 cents per kilogram of apples, while production costs continue to rise, making it difficult to earn a profit.

The apple cultivation area in Brandenburg has slightly decreased, from 755 hectares last year to 735 hectares. The primary growing regions are located in the districts of Potsdam-Mittelmark and Märkisch-Oderland, as well as in Frankfurt (Oder). Leading table apple varieties include Elstar, Gala, Pinova, and Jonagold.
