Braunschweig’s crisis deepens as Osnabrück win Lower Saxony derby

Eintracht Braunschweig’s slide continued with a 3-1 defeat to VfL Osnabrück in the Lower Saxony derby. The loss gave Braunschweig four consecutive defeats in competitive matches.

Osnabrück’s Daniel Kofi Kyereh opened the scoring in the 52nd minute, Bjarke Jacobsen added a second in the 76th, and Robin Meißner made it 3-0 four minutes later. Yann Sturm scored Braunschweig’s only goal in the 88th minute. Kyereh’s goal marked his first professional strike after more than three years out with injury.

Braunschweig had approached the match more cautiously after conceding nine goals in two recent games, a 4-2 German Cup loss to Union Berlin and a 5-3 league defeat by Hertha BSC. Osnabrück, meanwhile, had just faced Bayern Munich in a German Cup match that ended 4-1.

The derby began slowly. Osnabrück did not register its first shot on target until the 41st minute, while Braunschweig looked more purposeful. Andi Hoti hit the post with a deflected shot in the 20th minute, and Osnabrück goalkeeper Jonas Krumrey denied Max Marie in the 37th. Osnabrück coach Timo Schultz introduced Kyereh at halftime, and the substitute scored soon afterward. Braunschweig could not respond as Osnabrück raised its level and earned the victory over its regional rival.
