Brazil accuses U.S. of seeking economic control, calls demands 'unreasonable'

Brazil's top diplomat has sharply criticized the United States, accusing Washington of seeking undue control over key sectors of the Brazilian economy. Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira stated that a new 25% U.S. tariff on Brazilian goods is a direct result of Brazil's refusal to submit to what he termed "unreasonable" demands from the Trump administration.

"It is clear that what bothers the United States government is that Brazil did not bow to the excessive pretensions and unreasonable demands posed during the negotiations," Vieira declared in a strong statement made in Brasilia. He specifically called out U.S. Senator Marco Rubio for a "rude and arrogant" public comment made about Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
