The team's findings, published in the journal Molecules, focus on the ratio of oxygen-18 to oxygen-16 isotopes. This ratio varies across the Amazon based on rainfall patterns, creating a unique isotopic signature in tree wood. As moist air travels inland from the Atlantic, it loses heavier oxygen-18, resulting in rain with more oxygen-16 in the western Amazon. Trees absorb this water, embedding a lasting signature.

"Our goal is to provide the Federal Police with a tamperproof method. You can't falsify stable isotopes," Martinelli stated. He envisions the mapping tool, known as an isoscape, becoming usable by investigators without specialized training outside research labs once complete.
