Breaking: Brisbane Broncos player Corey Jensen announces medical retirement

Brisbane Broncos premiership prop Corey Jensen has been forced to retire from rugby league on medical advice after a diagnosis of a pulmonary embolism, a condition involving blood clots in the lungs.

The 95-game veteran for the Broncos, who also played 58 games for the North Queensland Cowboys, experienced a health scare during round seven of the season. Specialists advised Jensen that it was no longer safe for him to continue playing professionally.

After receiving medical advice and speaking to specialists, it's clear that it's no longer safe for me to play rugby league.

Jensen revealed he will need to take blood thinners for the rest of his life. "Since [the diagnosis] I've been able to train properly again, it's been like a mini pre-season, and I can do everything other than the contact, which is the frustrating part," he stated.

This diagnosis follows an earlier incident of deep vein thrombosis in his calf a year prior, with both events considered unprovoked. Jensen expressed gratitude for his wife Shannen's support throughout his career and the sacrifices she made.

Jensen, who holds a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science, is well-positioned for a future career in sports science should he choose to pursue it. His dedication and hard work saw him develop into a key player after debuting in 2017.
