BREAKING: Ex-UNILORIN VC, AbdulGaniyu Ambali, dies at 68

Professor AbdulGaniyu Ambali, a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, has died at the age of 68. The renowned veterinary medicine scholar and university administrator passed away early Saturday morning at his home in Oloje Estate, Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State.

The University of Ilorin's Director of Corporate Affairs, Kunle Akogun, confirmed Ambali's death. He stated that the current Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, announced the passing of the 9th Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali. Ambali, who led the university from 2012 to 2017, died after a brief illness. The Vice-Chancellor described his death as a significant loss to the University of Ilorin, Kwara State University, Malete, and the nation.

Before his death, Ambali held the position of Chairman and Pro-Chancellor at Kwara State University. His academic journey began in Ilorin, where he attended Pakata Primary School and Government Secondary School, Jalingo. He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Ahmadu Bello University in 1981 and later pursued Master's and PhD degrees in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Liverpool. Ambali lectured at the University of Maiduguri before joining the University of Ilorin, where he advanced to become a Professor of Veterinary Medicine and the founding Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. He also served as Chairman of the Association of West African Universities and was a Fellow of the College of Veterinary Surgeons of Nigeria.
