Breakup leads to murder: Man charged with premeditation after initial 'crime of passion' probe

A man in his 20s, initially suspected of committing a crime of passion after his girlfriend ended their relationship, now faces charges of premeditated murder following a more thorough investigation by prosecutors.

The suspect, identified only as 'A', is accused of killing his ex-girlfriend, identified as 'B', in Seoul's Gangdong District on June 1. The investigation revealed that 'A' assaulted 'B' with a frying pan and a knife before strangling her with a phone charger.

While the police initially treated the incident as a crime of passion, the prosecution's subsequent investigation, including digital forensics on the couple's mobile phones, uncovered evidence suggesting premeditation. Prosecutors found that 'A' had searched for terms like 'frying pan head injury death,' 'brain location,' and 'skull structure' on his phone prior to the murder.

Further investigation revealed that 'A' had entered 'B's' residence without permission and remained there against her wishes, even after she had ended their relationship. This detail, along with other information gathered from the victim's family and friends, contributed to the prosecution's revised assessment of the crime.

The prosecution has requested an electronic ankle monitor for 'A', citing a high risk of recidivism for violent crimes based on psychological analysis. The Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors' Office stated its commitment to uncovering the truth through thorough supplementary investigations and ensuring a robust prosecution during the trial. They have also arranged for a public defender for the victim and initiated victim support measures.
