Bremen election campaign: SPD bets on continuity

Andreas Bovenschulte wants to remain Bremen’s mayor and president of the Senate for a third term. The state SPD executive unanimously nominated him as its lead candidate for the next parliamentary election.

“I also want to be mayor of Bremen and Bremerhaven and president of the Senate in the next legislative term,” Bovenschulte said. He is due to be formally chosen at a special state party conference on September 19, ahead of the election scheduled for May 30, 2027.

Bovenschulte said his government had set several initiatives in motion, but major challenges remained. “We need an economically strong state where jobs are created and secured,” he said, describing that as the basis for financing public services and fighting poverty.

The SPD has supplied Bremen’s mayor since the end of World War II. Since 2019, it has governed in a coalition with the Greens and the Left under Bovenschulte’s leadership.

The other parties are preparing their own campaigns. The Greens plan to field Environmental Senator Henrike Müller and Finance Senator Björn Fecker as a leading duo. The CDU, the state’s largest opposition party, has selected parliamentary group leader Wiebke Winter, who wants to end the Social Democrats’ decades-long rule and become Bremen’s first female head of government. The FDP’s lead candidate is parliamentary group leader Thore Schäck, while the Left has chosen parliamentary group leader Sofia Leonidakis. The Citizens in Anger and the Bürgerallianz Bremen/Bremerhaven group also hold seats in the state parliament.
