Brexit figurehead Nigel Farage resigns as MP, to seek re-election in by-election

Nigel Farage, a prominent Brexit campaigner and leader of the right-wing Reform UK party, announced he is resigning his parliamentary seat but intends to contest a by-election for his position. The decision comes as his party leads in British opinion polls.

At a press conference in London, Farage expressed intense anger, accusing the media of conducting a campaign against him and his family that jeopardized their safety. He stated that the constituents of his Clacton constituency should now judge his actions and declared his intention to "fight to win" the upcoming by-election.

Farage's resignation follows recent scrutiny over undeclared donations and financial support. Reports from "Sunday Times" suggested he did not properly disclose support from George Cottrell, who has a fraud conviction. Cottrell allegedly financed security and staff for Farage in the year leading up to his election. Farage denies these allegations, asserting he adhered to all regulations.

Further revelations from "The Guardian" indicated that Farage received a £5 million personal gift shortly before his election, which was not declared as a donation. Farage maintains it was a personal gift without conditions. The parliamentary standards commissioner is investigating the matter, which could have led to a temporary expulsion from the House of Commons and a by-election with an uncertain outcome. Farage's move preempts this potential scenario, positioning him for a potential political comeback.
