Bridges not up to scratch, roads to be returned to gravel - South Island counts cost of under investment

A new report obtained by RNZ highlights a significant disparity in government transport funding, with the South Island receiving only $1 of every $9 allocated nationally. This comes despite the South Island accounting for a substantial portion of New Zealand's economic activity and tourism.

The report indicates that while the South Island represents almost a quarter of the country's population (22%) and contributes a third of export goods, it receives a disproportionately small share of transport investment. This underinvestment is particularly concerning given that the region captures 40% of all international visitor spending.

The findings suggest that the current allocation of transport funds does not adequately reflect the South Island's economic contribution or its importance to the nation's tourism sector. This imbalance raises questions about the adequacy of the region's infrastructure, including roads and bridges, which may be suffering from a lack of necessary investment.
