Taylor Atley, artistic director of Millennial Productions, highlights the significant costs involved, with budgets for a single show ranging from $25,000 to $80,000. Despite these expenses, the company strives to keep ticket prices accessible, recently increasing them from $35 to $45 to cover rising costs. Millennial Productions operates on a self-funded model, with cast and crew volunteering their time and covering their own insurance, as expenditure does not include salaries. Funds are generated through ticket sales, fundraisers, and concessions. Atley invested her own house deposit to launch the company, which has now achieved a self-sufficient cycle. This independent spirit is contrasted with the struggles of major productions like "Beetlejuice," "Waitress," and "Back to the Future," which have recently cancelled or cut short national tours due to increased production and travel expenses, as well as shifts in consumer behavior. Independent theatre operators attribute their success to "extreme financial creativity," repurposing set pieces, utilizing digital programs, and fostering a strong community connection to keep the spotlight on high-quality productions.
