Britain's Hunt and Asher-Smith set medal records at European Championships

Dina Asher-Smith and Amy Hunt achieved historic milestones at the European Championships on Sunday, cementing Britain's success in the sprint events. Hunt, 24, made history by becoming the first athlete to secure four gold medals at the same European Championships. Her latest triumph came in the mixed 4x100m relay, where she helped Britain set a European record of 39.97 seconds, adding to her earlier victories in the individual 100m, 200m, and the women's 4x100m relay.

"Oh my gosh, I am over the moon. I think to finish it off with some of my best friends in the sport is incredible," Hunt told the BBC, expressing her elation. Meanwhile, Asher-Smith, 30, expanded her own record as the most successful athlete in the competition's 92-year history. She now holds eight European gold medals and 11 medals overall, contributing to Britain's dominant performance in the sprints alongside teammates Jeremiah Azu and Zharnel Hughes.

Georgia Hunter Bell also secured a gold medal for the hosts in the 1500m. Bell's victory marked a significant comeback after she had previously quit the sport for five years. Despite Britain's strong showing, securing nine gold medals and 19 overall, they finished second in the medal table behind Italy. Italy clinched the top spot by winning the final gold medal of the championships in the men's 4x400m relay, finishing just 0.03 seconds ahead of the British team. Matthew Hudson-Smith's silver in that event moved him past Christophe Lemaitre as the most decorated man in championship history with nine medals.
