British Jamming System to Boost Ukraine's Air Defense Capabilities

Ukraine is poised to gain the capability to mass-produce a British electronic warfare system designed to disrupt Russian air defenses, a move expected to significantly enhance Kyiv's combat effectiveness. The system, dubbed Stone Cloak, is a jamming device mounted on drones and missiles.

According to reports, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham is set to grant Ukraine permission to domestically manufacture the Stone Cloak system during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's visit to London. Thousands of these devices, measuring a few decimeters in diameter, have already been supplied to Ukraine and have demonstrated efficacy on the battlefield by creating chaos within Russian air defense networks.

Military expert Johan Huovinen explained that Russia's advanced air defense missiles rely on directed radio waves for guidance. The Stone Cloak system disrupts this guidance beam, particularly in the final stages of engagement, potentially causing the missiles to deviate from their course. If the jamming is successful, the air defense missile will go off course and automatically self-destruct within seconds. Huovinen noted that while Russia can attempt to counter this by changing guidance frequencies, the British jammers appear adept at quickly locating new frequencies. This development might compel Russia to shift from guided missiles to more traditional anti-aircraft artillery.

The Stone Cloak system is also slated for integration into new British weapon systems, including the inexpensive cruise missiles being developed for Ukraine under the Brakestop project. British military officials believe that licensing the system to Ukraine will also benefit the UK's own defense, providing valuable performance data for future iterations of the jamming technology.
