British Museum unveils unique display for Bayeux Tapestry

The British Museum is set to unveil an unprecedented display of the Bayeux Tapestry, presenting the 70-meter medieval embroidery flat for the first time during its exceptional loan.

From September 10, 2026, to July 11, 2027, visitors in London will be able to admire the 11th-century masterpiece, which chronicles Duke William of Normandy's conquest of England in 1066. Unlike its usual display in Normandy, where it is mounted on a wall, the museum has chosen to exhibit the linen cloth laid flat.

"Presenting the Tapestry flat allows the public to fully grasp the scale of this spectacular and unique medieval embroidery," stated the institution. The museum will also employ digital tools to enhance visitor understanding of the 70-meter-long, 50-cm-wide, 350-kg artwork. To contextualize the tapestry within the historical narrative of the Norman conquest, related artifacts from the museum's collection and loans from other institutions will be exhibited alongside it.

These accompanying items include an illuminated manuscript that may have inspired the tapestry's creators in their depiction of clothing, ships, and daily life. The tapestry itself, composed of nine joined linen panels, features approximately 626 figures and 202 horses across 58 scenes. Tickets for this highly anticipated "blockbuster" exhibition will go on sale in phases starting July 1, with prices ranging from 25 to 33 pounds.
