British police expand Prince Andrew investigation to include sexual misconduct

The Thames Valley Police have issued a public appeal, widening the scope of their investigation into Prince Andrew to encompass allegations of sexual misconduct. This clarification aims to dispel any public perception that the inquiry is solely focused on potential breaches of confidentiality during his tenure as a special representative for UK trade and investment.

According to Oliver Wright, Deputy Chief Constable of TVP, the offense of "misconduct in public office" is complex and can manifest in various ways. This includes not only corruption and deliberate neglect of public duties but also sexual misconduct, conflicts of interest, fraud, and actions aimed at personal gain. The police are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward, emphasizing that a team of experienced detectives is diligently working through a substantial volume of received data.

Prince Andrew, the second son of the late Queen Elizabeth II, was detained and subsequently released in February as part of the investigation into alleged misconduct during his time as the UK's trade envoy. This investigation is further complicated by revelations from the "Epstein files," which suggest the former Duke of York may have passed confidential British government information to the convicted sex offender and financier Jeffrey Epstein. Additionally, Virginia Giuffre has accused Andrew of sexually assaulting her on three occasions when she was a minor in 2001, with Epstein's alleged involvement. Although Prince Andrew denies all accusations, he reached a multimillion-dollar out-of-court settlement in 2022 to end Giuffre's civil lawsuit.

The British police have also formally requested access to the original versions of the Epstein case files from the U.S. Department of Justice, awaiting their response. Prince Andrew, now known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, was removed from public life in 2019 due to his association with Epstein. Subsequent revelations led King Charles III to strip him of all official titles in October and demand he vacate Royal Lodge, his former residence on the royal estate.
