Broadcaster Park Soo-hong's Sister-in-Law Appeals Defamation Conviction

The sister-in-law of South Korean broadcaster Park Soo-hong has lodged an appeal after being handed a suspended jail sentence for defamation. The 50-something woman, identified as Ms. Lee, was convicted of spreading false information regarding Park Soo-hong's private life, a case that has garnered significant public attention.

Earlier, the Seoul Western District Court's Criminal Appeals Division 1 had upheld the initial ruling, sentencing Ms. Lee to a fine of 12 million won. The charges stemmed from messages sent to a KakaoTalk group chat, alleging that Park Soo-hong had lived with a woman during his television appearances. Ms. Lee's defense argued that her actions were a defensive response aimed at clarifying misunderstandings, not intended for defamation.

However, the appellate court rejected this argument, stating that the potential for the information to spread could not be dismissed. The court cited evidence that Ms. Lee's acquaintances had commented on news articles related to the allegations, leading to an investigation, thus establishing the public nature of her statements. The appeal signifies Ms. Lee's continued rejection of the court's findings.
