Broers-Bol overcomes 'mental hurdles' for 800m bronze in European Championship debut

Femke Broers-Bol has shattered expectations in her debut season at the 800 meters, securing a bronze medal at the European Championships in Birmingham. The Dutch athlete not only achieved a podium finish but also equaled the 34-year-old Dutch national record of 1:55.54, previously held by Ellen van Langen.

Broers-Bol had initially approached the season as a "transition year," focusing on her metamorphosis from a 400m hurdler to a middle-distance runner. She aimed to learn, make mistakes, and set no concrete goals. However, her performance in Birmingham proved her current underdog status is no longer realistic, demonstrating her emergence as a world-class talent in under ten months.

Hodgkinson, who had been chasing the world record, faced questions about her form after a recent knee injury, while Werro had also shown strong performances throughout the season.
